Resumé

Imaginative, colorful and loud

Christiania posters through 45 years

2016 marks the forty-fifth anniversary of the founding of Freetown

Christiania. To mark the occasion in Den Gamle By, the Danish

Poster Museum opened an exhibition on the 30th June 2016

that, by means of posters, provides insights into the life, development,

and ideals of the Freetown.

Prior to the establishment of Christiania, the area had been

used by the military, which gradually withdrew during the period

1967-1971. On 26 September 1971 a small group of activists forced

their way onto the grounds of the former military facility and

occupied

the area.

Christiania was founded in the slipstream of all the socially

transformative movements that characterized the 1960s and

1970s. Without the period’s revolt against earlier conventions,

without its great wildness and rejection of existing values, the

establishment

of the Freetown would never have occurred.

This article is about Christiania, about the founding of the

Freetown, and about the movement that resulted in the birth

of the Freetown. It presents a small selection of the many

thousands

of posters that contribute to the preservation of the

Freetown’s

history.
