Resumé

A Somali home in Denmark
In March 2016, the exhibition Et somalisk hjem i Danmark 2016
[A Somali Home in Denmark in 2016] opened. This exhibition is
the result of a unique collaboration between six Somali women
and Den Gamle By that resulted in the creation of a Danish-Somali
home at the museum. A home that has proven to be both
Danish and something very different. A home that reveals that
the inhabitants have made a new beginning in a new country.
The exhibition gives visitors to Den Gamle By an opportunity
to get close to a world in Denmark with which few people are
familiar.
At the same time, the visiting Somali families gain insight
into Danish culture as presented by Den Gamle By. For the group
of Somali women, the exhibition has meant that they feel themselves
to be a part of history and feel that their children have two
cultures of which they can be proud.
The apartment is the latest result of the museum’s collaboration
with the citizens of Aarhus. In Den Gamle By we work with
history, but we also work with contemporary society both by
means of the collection of objects and knowledge and by means
of the transmission of knowledge. Working collaborative with
locals
includes more people
