We want visitors to feel Den Gamle By is relevant and interesting, both now
and in future, so the exhibitions have to keep up with the times. We have
built a whole new 1974 district, and collected documentation and objects
for a street from 2014.
The three homes and five shops in the 2014 street will be different from
those in the 1974 district. Together, they will project different ways of life,
family constellations and types of businesses that were typical of the decades
around 2000. Specifically, the residents in the 2014 street will be a
rainbow family, a single woman and an elderly, single man. The shops we
have chosen are a bank, a sun-tanning salon, a 7-Eleven, a pizzeria and an
ice cream parlour.
The street is modest in size, and it will be possible for Den Gamle By to
update the flats and businesses later to a new focus year. Then the street
will continue to link up with ‘now’ at any time, as the future becomes the
present.
